Background of the Study
Digital political campaigns have transformed the dynamics of electoral contests, especially in urban centers such as Port Harcourt, Nigeria. With increasing internet penetration and mobile device usage, political candidates are leveraging digital platforms to engage with voters and shape public opinion. This study focuses on a local election in Port Harcourt, examining the strategies employed by political campaigns to influence voter sentiment and decision-making through digital media (Ibe, 2023). The integration of social media, email campaigns, and online forums has redefined how political information is disseminated, allowing campaigns to reach diverse voter groups quickly and cost-effectively. Digital campaigns are characterized by their ability to personalize messages, track engagement in real time, and adapt strategies based on data analytics. However, the rapid evolution of digital tools raises questions regarding the sustainability and ethical implications of these campaigns. Moreover, the effect of online political narratives on shaping public opinion remains a critical area for research, particularly in regions where traditional media still coexist with emerging digital voices. By systematically analyzing online content, voter feedback, and campaign performance metrics, this research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of digital political campaigns in influencing public opinion during local elections (Okafor, 2024). The findings will provide valuable insights for political practitioners and scholars interested in the intersection of technology, politics, and public perception.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing reliance on digital platforms for political campaigning in Port Harcourt, there is limited empirical evidence on how these digital efforts translate into shifts in public opinion. The mechanisms through which digital content influences voter perceptions and the degree to which such influence contributes to electoral outcomes remain poorly understood (Ibe, 2023). Additionally, the prevalence of disinformation and algorithm-driven echo chambers poses challenges to the authenticity of online political narratives. This study seeks to address these issues by evaluating the impact of digital political campaigns on public opinion during a local election, thereby clarifying the relationship between digital strategies and voter behavior. The research intends to fill a crucial gap in current literature by offering a nuanced analysis of the digital transformation in political campaigning (Okafor, 2024).
